Pomegranates
are filled with antioxidants, in fact they are right up there with blueberries,
red wine and green tea. One of the most recent touted
health benefits of pomegranate juice is lowering cholesterol and blood
pressure. Indeed, pomegranate juice seems to have a pronounced affect
on artery health and the cardiovascular system.
My father ,who has suffered from high blood pressure and high
cholesterol for 20 years now had gotten wind of these great benefits
and decided to try some pomegranate juice. He drank 8 ounces a day
starting about a month before his next doctors appointment. When he
went to the doctors, his blood pressure was done 6 points and his
cholesterol was down too! The nurses was amazed, but when he told her
about the pomegranate juice she said that some other patients with
improved results had mentioned that they had started drinking the juice
too!
Pomegranates are high in Iron as well as vitamins C, E and A and also
includes anthocyanins , polyphenolics, tannins - all of which can have
a healthy affect on your body. But perhaps the most important health
benefit of pomegranate juice is it’s effect on your arteries
and heart health. You’ve probably already heard that red wine
and green tea are good for your heart, but preliminary studies indicate
that pomegranate juice has 3 times more antioxidants than wine and
green tea.
Antioxidants help to fight free radicals that can change the
cholesterol through oxidation. This oxidation is thought to contribute
to hardening of the arteries. A study in Haifa at the Rambam Medical
Center discovered that pomegranate juice could cut this oxidation rate
in half and also reduce the amount of LDL the body retains. In
addition, pomegranate juice has been found to increase levels of nitric
oxide, improve blood flow to the heart, reduce arterial plaque, reduce
systolic blood pressure and help with erectile dysfunction. Additional
benefits may include helping to prevent stroke, Alzheimer’s,
arthritis, premature aging and even some cancers.
Like with anything else, the type of pomegranate juice you drink will
relate directly to it’s health benefits. Of course, you could
buy pomegranates and juice them or eat the seeds - this could be rather
time consuming as these fruits are hard to cut into. You could also buy
juice in the store - but be sure to get 100% pure pomegranate juice
with no sugar or anything else added - that’s what my father
drinks and it’s working for him!
One thing though, if you do decide to avail yourself of the health
benefits of pomegranate juice you might want to check with your doctor
first, especially if you are on any medications. The pomegranate juice
may interact with medications and inhibit their function so
it’s best to check before hand as some interactions can be
severe.
