7 Ways To Reduce Cholesterol

Products

Cholesterol is a compound found in fatty food. Cholesterol is not good for the heart. Too much cholesterol in the body is going to be destructive to it. It could be the cause of major heart problems and similar fatal diseases.

There are a lot of reasons why there is too much cholesterol in a person's body. It could be because of eating food rich with the substance. Or, it could also be because of heredity. This disease, unfortunately, can be passed on to the next generation.

To effectively lower the cholesterol level of your blood, doctors will be prescribing a proper diet firsthand. Diet plays a very important role here. Proper diet would eventually take you to the cholesterol-free zone of healthier living.

Here are some things you can consider when preparing a diet, with the aim of reducing your cholesterol levels:

1. Determine which foods are high in fats and avoid it. Dietary fat is either saturated or unsaturated. Try to stay away from both animal fats and vegetable fats. Examples of food containing animal fat are ice cream, whole milk, cheese, and butter. The white streaks found in animal meat are also rich in fats, especially saturated fats. Vegetable fats, on the other hand, can be found in chocolates, baked goodies, coffee creamers, whipped toppings, and sometimes, even frozen dinners.

2. If fat has to be taken in, settle for unsaturated fats. Unsaturated or polyunsaturated fats are better than the saturated ones. If you have to cook in oil, use soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower, or sesame cooking oils instead. When you have to buy similar products, maybe as an ingredient for your daily cooking, read the label. Example, if you have to buy a dressing for your salad, check if one of the contents of the package says hydrogenated fats. If so, you'll know that one of the polyunsaturated fats had been made into saturated fat, therefore, bad for the health.

3. Eat foods low in cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol can be found in common foods, and usually, it comes from animals. Dietary cholesterol can also raise one's blood cholesterol levels. Cholesterol can be found in dairy products, shellfish, eggs, meat, fish, liver and poultry. There are foods that are high in cholesterol but are low in fat, or the other way around. Liver is an example of it. Liver is low in fat but has very high cholesterol content.

4. Take in substantial amounts of carbohydrates instead of fats. Instead of eating the foods stated above which are rich in fats and cholesterol, eat those that are rich in carbohydrates instead. Eat starchy and fiber-rich foods. These are breads, fruits, cereals, pasta, rice, and vegetables. These food are good substitutes to the rather high cholesterol, high fat diet that you might be leading even without your knowledge.

5. Always watch your weight. High blood cholesterol levels are going to be apparent on people that are overweight. Try to check with your doctor what's your ideal weight given your height and body mass. Then be guided with that. Maintain that desirable weight and to not stray from it. If you watch what you eat, you will have lower chances of having too much bad cholesterol present in your body.

6. Cut on salt. If possible, do not use salt on food anymore. This can trigger your cholesterol levels up. If you have to use salt, try to do it as minimal as possible. Do not over consume salt because it does not only raise your cholesterol level; reduce your life expectancy as well. Several researches had proven that.

7. Reduce food rich in sugar. Sodas and similar beverages have really high sugar content. These are foods that you should also slash from your diet. Added sugars on food are not necessary. If you can, settle for sugar-free sweeteners.

Reducing cholesterol should be the primary concern of all individuals. Nobody gets younger. As one's age advances, he becomes more prone to heart diseases and heart failures. And the most usual cause of that is high cholesterol level in the blood. Do all of these steps and you are sure to live a healthier, fuller life!
