Not all cholesterol is bad. In fact, despite what nutritionists and doctors day that we must avoid cholesterol is an exaggeration. If we do so, we wouldn’t have the needed cholesterol amount in our fat that helps in excreting the needed hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. Cholesterol are the building blocks in our body and with their help, we are able to produce bile acids and utilize the Vitamin D we get from the sun.
Although there is truth to the doctors’ and nutritionists’ advice about cholesterol. Too much is bad for your health. It is because cholesterol is the one responsible for transferring the nutrients in our body to the liver. Now if our intake has too much fat and salt, then we are only causing ourselves harm by blocking the artery with so much fat from this cholesterol.
The solution to this is balance of what we eat. Let us buy products that have low-cholesterol, saturated fat and saturated salt. Cholesterol being linked to high risk of getting heart disease does not mean that you will avoid cholesterol completely.
Add to the fact that there are two kinds of cholesterol. There’s the good cholesterol which is known as the high density lipoprotein or HDL. Then the negative one which is the low density lipoprotein or LDL. The proportion of LDL to HDL determines the degree of the atherosclerosis leading to the individual being at a risk for a heart problem.
This is referred to as the bad cholesterol because it contains the plague that results to the build up of toxins in the arteries or what is scientifically known as atherosclerosis.
It is advised that the LDL level should be maintained at a low level. For children, this is easier handled. Here are some tips on how you can do so:
- Avoid foot that are high in cholesterol, saturated in fat and contain excess calories.
- Exercise regularly to maintain the blood flow and to shed off the unwanted pounds.
- Maintain a healthy weight that is right for your built and your height. Not only will you look better, you will also feel better about yourself.
It is also advisable that you have a consultation with your doctor regarding your LDL level. It will just take a couple of hours from your busy schedule. By undertaking a routine profile exam that calculates your total cholesterol level with your HDL, your LDL level will be determined.
Question is, how do you know whether your cholesterol level is healthy? Blood cholesterol is specific to every person. But for the LDL, it must be less than 140 mg.
When it exceeds that figure, then this is high LDL level. The borderline is 110 to 120 mg. Less than 110 mg is acceptable. These are for people who have coronary heart disease. This is to ensure that their health is not at risk.
If ever you have high LDL, here are the steps how you can decrease your LDL.
- Lessen your diet involving saturated fat.
- Maintain the nutrients found in your body by eating a balanced diet.
- Increase your intake of fiber
- Exercise regularly
If the person does not have the sufficient cholesterol count in his body, there is the reduction in the cell’s ability to create its own cholesterol. Therefore the cholesterol esters (or the new form of cholesterol HDL) are deposited in the form of storage droplets. Cholesterol accumulated by the cell stops the synthesis between and HDL and the LDL receptors. Only enough cholesterol is brought in to parts needed.
People who have a history of CHD must be careful in having a high LDL count because these result to hypercholesterolemia which lead to high blood cholesterol and heart attacks.
In a nut shell, LDL lipoprotein carries the cholesterol into the blood. If there is too much LDL cholesterol, then it builds up in the artery walls. There will be a clot and the nutrients will have a harder time getting to the brain and the heart. The clot in the heart is a condition known as “atherosclerosis.” The clot then blocks the blood flow, therefore leading to a heart attack. The higher the LDL, the greater the risk to have a coronary heart disease. That is why LDL is the enemy.
